How to Find the Right Online High School for Your Child

Soham Berry

You may be considering transferring your child out of regular in-person school into an online high school. There could be a number of reasons for this from health issues to sports training or more. Online high school can be a great way for your child to get an education while giving them the time they need to pursue their dreams.

You might be wondering how to find an online high school that fits your child's needs. Here are some tips for finding the right online high school for your child.

Research Their Accreditation

When you are looking for an online high school you will find there are many to choose from. While their courses might seem great and a perfect fit for your child, they might not actually be accredited or registered with your school board. This could mean your child won't earn the credits they need to graduate.

Instead, look for schools that are either accredited or registered with your local school board to ensure you are finding schools that your child will receive their diploma from. You can talk to your child's counselor at their present school to see if any online schools are affiliated with the school board. You can also do a search online and then check their credentials with local organizations.

Read Their Course Descriptions

Not all online high schools will offer the same type of courses. While they will have the basics that your child needs to graduate, they will offer other courses for credit that other schools might not. You can even choose online schools geared toward specific interests, career goals, or talents.

For example, you could look for a school with a focus on math and science because your child might want to be a doctor. Or, you could look for a school with an artistic leaning, as your child might be a great artist, actor, or musician.

Read each school's course description carefully and see whether or not the school is a good fit for your child.

Credit Transfers

If your child is coming from an in-person high school setting and transferring to an online high school you should find out if any credits they have already earned toward their diploma will transfer to their online school. If the school is accredited or affiliated with your local school board, they should. That way your child doesn't have to start from the beginning in earning credits again.
